The single highest-converting cold-email opener for web designers is a specific observation about the prospect's site. Generic “your website could be better” replies at 1%. “Your mobile load time is 6.2s and the booking widget is broken on Safari” replies at 12%. Here's the 60-second audit that generates that observation for any local-business URL.

The 6-checkpoint audit (60 seconds total)

1. Is HTTPS on? (5 seconds)

Open the URL. If the address bar shows “Not Secure,” that's your line one: “Your site is served over plain HTTP - browsers warn visitors and Google penalizes ranking. A 1-day fix.” About 8% of local SMB sites still fail this in 2026.

2. Mobile load time (15 seconds)

Open the URL on your phone or use Chrome DevTools' “Lighthouse” tab. If LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) is over 3 seconds, that's your hook: “Mobile buyers bounce at 3 seconds. Your LCP is X seconds, so you're losing roughly Y% of mobile visits before they see a single word.”

Or use our Website Health Check to score everything in one shot.

3. Booking / contact widget (10 seconds)

Scroll to the contact section. Is there an embedded scheduler (Calendly, Cliniko, OpenTable, etc.)? Or just a phone number and hours? For service businesses (dentists, plumbers, salons), the missing widget is the single biggest conversion lever. About 65% of sites we audit fail this.

4. Booking-friction proxy (10 seconds)

If there is a contact form, count the fields. More than 6 fields is a leak. More than 10 is a hemorrhage. “Your form has 14 fields; cutting to 4 typically doubles inquiries within 30 days” is a cold-email line that books meetings.

5. Social proof above the fold (10 seconds)

Scroll to the hero. Is the Google rating, review count, or any kind of testimonial visible without scrolling? Most local SMB sites bury reviews on a separate page. “Your 4.8 rating from 230 reviews doesn't appear above the fold - the strongest trust signal you already have, hidden” is line one.

6. Title + meta description (10 seconds)

Right-click + view page source. Find <title> and the meta description. If either is missing, generic, or over 65 characters, Google rewrites them and ranks the page worse. Quick check, easy cold-email line.

Translating the audit into cold-email line one

Pick the WORST checkpoint. That's your hook. Examples:

  • HTTPS fail:“Your site loads over HTTP - Chrome shows a Not Secure warning to every visitor before they see your hero.”
  • Slow LCP:“Your mobile load time is 6.2s. Mobile buyers bounce at 3s.”
  • No booking:“You have a 4.8 rating from 230 patients but no online booking. 70% of new-patient inquiries now happen between 7pm and midnight.”
  • Long form:“Your intake form has 14 fields. Cutting to 4 typically doubles inquiries.”
  • Buried reviews:“Your 4.8 rating doesn't appear on the homepage. The strongest trust signal you have, hidden.”

The 4-line email that uses the audit

Drop the audit observation into line one of any cold email. The full template:

  • Line 1: the specific audit observation
  • Line 2: the consequence (lost calls, lower ranking, weak conversion)
  • Line 3: the offer (mockup, 1-page rebuild, audit PDF)
  • Line 4: the soft close (“reply yes and I'll send the link”)

Reply rates from this structure run 8-15% on the no-website + audit-angle segment.
